Chino High Basketball Seeks Historic Semifinal Berth

For decades, Chino High School basketball has been on the cusp of breaking through. The quarterfinals have long been the biggest hurdle, the final step before reaching new heights. But now, with a talented roster and a determined coaching staff, the Cowboys stand on the brink of history.

Tomorrow night at 7:00 PM, Chino will take the floor against California High School in the CIF Division 4A quarterfinals—a game that could finally propel the Cowboys into the semifinals.

This isn’t unfamiliar territory for Coach Cooper. In the 2020-21 season, he led Chino to the quarterfinals, where they fell to Linfield Christian. That run marked the first time in 43 years that Chino had reached this stage, reigniting hope in the program. That team fell just short, but it set the foundation for what has now become one of the most promising squads in recent school history.

“This game is about more than just us,” Coach Cooper said after practice. “It’s about every player who’s worn this jersey and came up short before. It’s about proving that Chino basketball belongs among the best.”

The Cowboys enter the game with strong contributions across the board. Junior point guard Treston Davis commands the floor, averaging 14 points, 6 assists, and 6 rebounds per game. However, he suffered an ankle sprain in the second quarter of the second-round matchup and did not return, leaving his status for tomorrow’s game as day-to-day. Senior combo guard Shawn Jamison Jr. leads the team in scoring with 22 points per game, while senior power forward Dario Shields Jr. dominates the glass with 18 points and 10 rebounds per contest. Junior shooting guard Yousef Imhud adds 11 points per game, and senior point guard Christian "CJ" Gibbs provides steady all-around play with 5 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Chino overcame a challenging preseason and responded with a dominant 10-0 record in league play. Their path to the quarterfinals has been anything but easy, securing their playoff spot with back-to-back statement wins—first defeating Trinity Classical High School in the opening round, followed by a hard-fought victory over Mt. Baldy League rivals Chaffey High School in the second round. But California High presents a new challenge—a well-coached team with size and depth. Coach Cooper and his staff have spent countless hours breaking down film, devising a game plan they hope will finally push them past the quarterfinal wall.

Chino will be playing on the road, but the team expects strong support from traveling students, alumni, and families eager to witness history. Despite being in an opposing gym, the energy will be electric, and for the players, the moment will be bigger than basketball.

“We’ve worked too hard to let this opportunity slip,” Davis said. “We’re ready to fight for every possession, every loose ball, every rebound. This is our time.”

For Chino High School, for its players, for Coach Cooper, and for every fan who has endured the heartache of past quarterfinal exits, tomorrow night isn’t just another game.

It’s a chance to make history.
